When a revolutionary six-piece chose the title Iwrestledabearonce, the decision proved both goofy and quite apt, the I’m With Busey reference heralding their position as LA’s over-the-top and bizarre answer to the gloomy progressive death metal scene. Rooted in the Cali hardcore fundamentals of bands Animosity and the epic, math-conscious sensibilities of Sun of Aurelius, IWAB throws in a bit of the kitchen sink mentality, peppering with cultural references be it The Dukes of Hazzard or Inspector Gadget. But while most deathcore groups use interludes to quench a consumerist thirst for pop indulgence, the breakdowns employed by IWAB sound more like Gang Gang Dance or Radiohead, other times lounged out or psychedelic. 2009’s It’s All Happening received rave reviews from the Examiner, which raved, “Technical heavies are raining down on you. Soaring chorus lifts you up. Jazz infused interludeness pushing you sideways. I won't even get started on the Z axis!”
