ENVY
Since 1992, Tokyo’s envy has put out top shelf hardcore music that fits within the primal, authentic delineations of screamo. The late 90’s saw them introducing more experimental, alternative flavors to their set. As Punknews puts it, Envy “has been shifting and contorting pre-conceived notions of hardcore music, pushing it to its most experimental reaches, whether that be the violent cacophony of the early-`90s San Diego scene or cascading post-rock.” Brutally capitalizing on the contrast of loud and silent, sweet and dissonant, these Japanese titans drill their art into the minds of their listeners. Their newest album Recitations has received blanket praise, NME declared it “a brutally romantic record.”
