THE NOTORIOUS MSG
The Chinatown community breathed a sigh of relief when the trio known as The Notorious MSG turned their efforts from terrorizing the streets to making music. Their gritty sound is a compound of the rawest sounds on the New York City streets, hip-hop and punk rock, through a lens of streetwise Chinese-American tradition. On jams like “Straight Out Of Canton,” they spin American favorites while inventing a style and lexicon all their own; new listeners will soon find themselves using terms like “muthasucka” in daily life. As important as their music is their series of online videos that deal with a number of issues pertinent to gangsters, such as Apple Jacks, working out, and “living with rectal prolapse.”
.357 LOVER
John Cameron Mitchell, who recruited .357 Lover for his Shortbus premier celebration, described the band’s sound as “the holy alliance between Meatloaf and ELO.” Ostensibly built upon the Queen-era glam rock sound, their cheeky lyrics explore the ins and outs of making out and the movie industry primarily. Their video for “Event Horizon” would win the Grammy/Oscar for green screening and face-rocking if either category existed.
GELATINE
From the vestiges of the Japanese riot grrl transplants 10 Yen Anakinoko comes Gelatine, which expands the sound of the former to include elements of heavy metal and demented pop. Fast, loud and progressive, their sound is as complex as it is heavy. Anchored by the spastic vocals of Seiko, Gelatine aims to entertain and frighten in equal measure.
